Travel And Ski In Bolivia: A Truly Unusual Travel Destination
Bolivia is a truly off the beaten travel destination. Its isolated location has caused it to develop into a really unique country with traditions, music and culture that you will not find anywhere else in South America. You can rub shoulders with indigenous ladies wearing bowler hats in the morning and sip cappuccinos with the suit-and-tie brigade in the afternoon.
La Paz is sure to leave you breathless in more than one respect. At 4000m it is not only the world’s highest capital, it also has the world’s highest commercial airport, and nearby is the world’s highest ski resort. Driving into the city from the airport, you will feel like driving down the rim of an extinct volcano… The city is surrounded by snowy mountain tops all year round.
Probably the best known tourist attraction of La Paz is the witches market. If you are looking for a Llama fetus to bury underneath your new house to bring good luck, you will find it here. You could certainly also find something to bring a bit of bad luck to your horrible boss back home. The huge open air market of 16 de Julio offers virtually anything you can think of; if you are looking for a wireless reading device you will find it here, and if you want to buy a 5 piece drum set you will most probably find that as well.
No trip to La Paz will be complete without visiting the well-known coca museum. Here you can see displays depicting the history of coca production in Bolivia. Most people think that the coca plant is only used to produce cocaine, but this is not true. It has been used by the locals for medicinal purposes, to produce tea and against altitude sickness for centuries.
You might not be aware that a famous soft drink containing the word coca in it’s name, used to also contain cocaine. This practice lasted well into the 20th century and was only terminated in 1929!
If at all possible, try to attend the biggest festival in La Paz, the Festividad del Senor del Gran Poder, held in winter every year. During 2009 more than 30 000 dancers took part in this amazing display of costumes, music and dance. It’s a whole day event, lasting from about nine in the morning until late in the night.
If you are lucky enough to have brought your Alpine skiing equipment, why not take a day trip to Chacaltaya – the nearby ski resort. The top of the lift is situated at 5400m – the same height as the base camp at Mt Everest – so make sure you are properly acclimatised. Many people find it hard to read a book at this altitude, never mind do physical exercise!
